COURSE DESCRIPTION

Our HSPT Prep Course prepares young men for the High School Placement Test.  Most Catholic high schools and some private schools use the HSPT as an entrance exam.  This course is designed to help students become familiar with the HSPT by taking timed practice tests in a real test-taking environment.  Each question on the test will be reviewed by an instructor who will explain how to answer more efficiently and effectively, while also giving general test taking tips.  A complete course is 4 days long, with 2.5 hours of class time each day.

Please note that this course is NOT a remedial tutoring program. We will cover all of the concepts presented by the test, but we will not spend time tutoring each student on a specific concept that may not have been covered at his school.  When recieving his scores, each participant will know the specific areas in which he needs to improve, and may be advised to seek tutiorial help outside of our course.  Needless to say, if a student is not engaged in his regular classes and homework, he will probably not benefit much from our program.

While the HSPT is a very important part of the high school application process, there are other essential factors which determine acceptance to particular schools; namely, grade point average, teacher recommendations, and a personal essay.  During the course we will give general tips in these three areas and a provide students with possible essay questions common to local Houston schools.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Why High School & Beyond?

As you begin high school, college may seem like something in the far distant future. It is not. Before long, you will be taking the SAT, going to college fairs, and poring meticulously over applications. Your options in choosing colleges will be determined by your performance in high school, which begins with your freshman year. A smart entering 9th grader will begin planning his high school career before he even walks through the school doors on the first day of class.

High School & Beyond is a program designed to help responsible students make the most of their high school years and maximize their college opportunities. It makes use of a well-crafted curriculum combining lectures, readings, discussions, strategy games, and team sports. The program challenges students to think critically and to establish goals and pursue them energetically.

High School & Beyond also emphasizes the need to grow in character at the same time as one develops one’s intellectual life. The program promotes the idea that one’s high school career should be seen not only as an opportunity to pursue self-development, but also, and more importantly, as an opportunity to learn to put one’s talents at the service of others—in short, to become a leader.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

After many inquiries about the possibility of an ISEE prep course to complement our popular HSPT prep course, Chaucer Drive Study Center is proud to annouce our first course to prepare you for the Independent School Entrance Examination.  The ISEE is used by many private secondary schools and magnet schools as their primary entrance exam. This course is designed to help students become familiar with the ISEE by taking timed practice tests in a real test-taking environment.  Each question on the test will be reviewed by an instructor who will explain how to answer more efficiently and effectively, while also giving general test taking tips.  A complete course is 4 days long, with 2.5 hours of class time each day.

While the ISEE is a very important part of the high school application process, there are other essential factors which determine acceptance to particular schools; namely, grade point average and teacher recommendations.  The ISEE involves a 30 minute essay but this will not be graded by the Education Records Bureau but simply passed along to each school to which a student has applied.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The high school years pass quickly, and for many young people they pass without a full sense of direction or overall plan.  High school should be the beginning of serious efforts to direct the course of one’s life as an adult – intellectually, professionally, spiritually.  The purpose of this seminar is to help high school men put these ideas into action.

High School & Beyond was developed by Mr. James Stenson, former Headmaster of Northridge Preparatory School in Chicago, and noted author.  The program will be presented for the fourteenth consecutive year by Chaucer Drive Study Center.  We will address the following questions:

• Success comes to people who ask the right sort of questions and then act upon them. What sort of questions should a high school student be asking now so as to shape his future?

• What sort of reading and learning should a young person pursue outside of school to give greater strength to his judgment?

• In practical terms, how can a high school student find out what career(s) he is best suited for?

• What trends in economic, religious, and international affairs are likely to affect a young person’s family and career over the next 25 years? How can he best track these trends as they unfold?

• What can a young man do now to meet the greatest challenge of his life — to raise his own children to become competent, responsible, considerate men and women who are committed to live by Christian principles?

In addition to the classes and discussions, the workshop will provide time for sports, outdoor activities, and night games such as capture the flag!  The one-week program will also include daily Mass and times of prayer for those interested.
